Story of Blöndalshús

Gunnlaugur Blöndal was one of Iceland’s most prominent painters of the early 20th century and played an important role in shaping modern Icelandic visual art. He is best known for his powerful landscapes and depictions of everyday life, combining realism with a distinctive personal style.
Blöndalshús, built in 1901, is closely linked to the Blöndal family and the early development of the settlement at Hvammstangi. The house was among the more significant residences in the area and reflects both the family’s social standing and their cultural engagement.
Gunnlaugur Blöndal lived in Blöndalshús for a period and worked there as an artist. He set up his studio in the attic, where he painted and developed his work in a quiet, light-filled space. The accompanying photograph shows him seated in front of his easels in the attic, deeply absorbed in his creative process. The image offers a rare glimpse into his working environment and directly connects the house to his artistic life.
